被包圍以及過分暴露於

In this section, each of the three passages is followed by five questions.
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options in each question.
Put down the number corresponding to the answer of your choice on the answer sheet.

(I)

Like a biochemist studying a colony of bacteria under the microscope, you minutely examine your every thought, feeling, and action. Probing, futile questions like “What do other people think of me?”, “How do I look?”, and “Maybe I shouldn’t have said that?” are your constant nagging companions, for you are unable to realize that other people do not spend as much time and energy analyzing you as you think.

You may seem unsocial, yet your greatest desire is to be liked and accepted. You may be shy and quiet, you are often moody and unhappy, and you prefer solitude or at most the company of one person to a crowd. You have an aptitude for creative work and are uncomfortable engaging in activities that require cooperation with other people. You may even be a genius, or eventually turn into one.

1. What is the theme of this article?

Ray Kurzweil began his dinner with a pill.“ A starch blocker.” He explained, “one of my 250 supplements a day.”

The risk of encountering starchy food seemed slight indeed at the vegetarian restaurant in Manhattan he had selected, where the fare was heavy with kale, seaweed, tofu, steamed broccoli and bean sprouts. But Mr. Kurzweil, a renowned inventor and computer scientist, has strong views on dietary matters.

His notion that emerging trends in medicine, biotechnology and nanotechnology open a realistic path to immortality is the central claim of a new book by Mr. Kurzweil and Dr. Terry Grossman, a physician and founder of a longevity clinic in Denver.

“I am serious about it,” said Mr. Kurzweil, a wiry man with a few lines on his face for 56-years-old.“I think death is a tragedy. I think aging is a tragedy. And going beyond our limitations is what our species is all about.”

The study of human biology, he said, is increasingly intersecting with his main field of expertise ─ computing.Mr. Kurzweil sees advances in medicine and genetics as leading to a view to biology as a kind of computation.

“Genes are sequential programs,” he said.“ We are learning how to manipulate the programs inside us, the software of life. And personally, I really believe that what I’m doing is reprogramming my biochemistry.”

1. Mr. Kurzweil is a well known

Experts say that the filmmaker, aviation genius and billionaire Howard Hughes suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, which can manifest itself in many ways, including an irrational fear of germs and obsessive hand washing. And though they generally don’t take their worries that far, many moviegoers may have felt a sympathetic solidarity with Mr. Hughes (as play by Leonardo DiCaprio) in the film “The Aviator” as he froze in terror at the prospect of a doorknob in a public restroom. More and more, the America is a nation of germophobes.

Donald Trump, the business mogul, describes himself as a “germ freak” who would prefer that people bow in greeting, Japanese style, rather than extend a germ-covered hand.

The nation’s germ obsession is no surprise. The news has been full of health worries like the SARS epidemic, viral outbreaks on cruise ships and biological weapons threats. During television commercials, advertisers have done their part to sound the alarm about germs lurking in places as varied as laundry and human mouths. Consumers now have their pick of germ-killing products, including toothbrush sanitizers, air purifiers and antibacterial soaps, cutting boards, clothing, keyboards and even refrigerators. About 75 percent of Americans use at least six or more antimicrobial products regularly, according to a 2002 study by Multi-Sponsor Surveys.

“Beyond cleaning your hands, all of this antibacterial stuff is nuts,” said Alice Prince, a professor of pediatrics at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.“ We’re exposed to bacteria all the time,” she said, adding that some exposure was good for building up immune systems.

1. The theme of this article is about

 (1) a filmmaker’s obsessive-compulsive disorder.
 (2) germ obsession worldwide.
 (3) germ obsession in a specific country.
